1. Prep the Yams
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C).
- Peel the yams and slice them into Β½-inch rounds.
- Arrange the slices in a single layer in a baking dish.
2. Make the Candy Mixture
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, and vanilla.
- Stir until smooth and syrupy (about 2β3 minutes).
- Add water or orange juice and mix well.
3. Pour & Coat
- Pour the syrup mixture evenly over the sliced yams.
- Use a spoon to coat each slice thoroughly.
4. Bake
- Cover the dish tightly with foil.
- Bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil.
- Gently spoon syrup over the yams again (baste).
- Continue baking 15β25 more minutes, uncovered, until yams are tender and syrup has thickened.
5. Serve
- Let cool for 5 minutes so the syrup sets.
